Fencing provides a structure within your garden that marks out the boundaries of your property, provides you with security and protection and can offer privacy in your garden.
There are many different types of fencing, each with their own strengths and weaknesses:
Close Board Fencing
This style of fencing is largely favoured within Lighthouse Landscaping. It’s strong and sturdy, offers great protection and is relatively easy to assemble. Once complete it looks smart and can create the impression that a garden is much larger than one thought. The drawback to this form of fencing is the cost – wood is expensive and this style utilises a lot of it.
Lap Panel Fencing
This form of fencing has the benefit of variety and inexpensive materials. Its strengths lie in the ability to change the panels whenever they wear, or if you desire a different style for a relatively low cost. While this form of fencing can sometimes be considered less secure and structurally weaker than close board, its style remains a popular choice owing to its clean finish and inexpensive replacements.
Post and Rail Fencing
This style of fencing is not designed for security but largely for establishing a boundary, yet offering something relatively pleasing to the eye. It’s quick and easy to put up and can be developed still into a different fence type further down the line e.g. close board fencing/picket fencing.
Again, this style of fencing isn’t usually designed for security. They can often be seen bordering the frontage of cottages or “chocolate box” houses. Picket fencing is pretty, particularly when combined with vibrant flowers and is more aesthetically pleasing than other styles of fencing.
Example fencing work, Cowes Isle of Wight.
Metal fencing is designed to establish borders and can be quite expensive to buy and install. It is very often used commercially owing to its security strengths, though it can often look quite unappealing. Alternatively, iron railings have been known to be strong and secure. The cost of these can be significant, though they offer a very pleasing finish to the eye.
Specialised and Contemporary Fencing
While the above fencing works well depending on your circumstances, it may be that your garden requires something different. The business of fencing is changing and you can create a fence to better suit your needs. Fencing such as bamboo might enhance a themed garden or PVC fencing may offer the maintenance-free boundary you desire.
